The specialness is not lost on me when someone arrives at the studio for a birthday shoot. Figure skating is a great match for a dance photography session! These two sisters, guided by a third older sister, did amazing in their shoot today. We smashed a lot of poses with grace and style. Thanks @mykierakyandkensie for starting my full day of sessions on such a wonderful vibe.

Future stars are always wonderful to shoot. They arrive to the studio with wonder and a bit of a guard. Then we make a few dad jokes and show them their talents on the dancer’s monitor. Yesterday’s session with @senniah_dancer was amazing! Pure artistic talent and the fabric portion delivered. Dancers like Senniah, work well with flow posing and the new monitor for viewing each dance pose. This makes session flow so much easier for crafting the images we are inspired by.

Today was the session I was looking forward to. When I finally felt like the gear, wardrobe, and performer were clicking.

After some trial and error with gear settings, the last few weeks, I feel like I am in the flow and the tools are performing under my command.

Today I worked with the new double-sided skirts that arrived from the UK on Christmas Eve. Over the coming shoots, I will unveil more of these amazing garments.

Spent some time today touring the studio of David Cooper, O.C. — one of the most respected dance photographers in the world, and easily one of Canada’s finest.

He’s worked with companies like The National Ballet of Canada, Royal Winnipeg Ballet, and Ballet BC, and his influence on how dance is photographed is hard to overstate. Also the Order of Canada! It was cool to go through his book and some recent photos while picking his brain on all things dance photography.

Grateful for the time, the stories, and the perspective. What an amazing chat!

Loved the editorial nature of the shoot with @sgsdancetourco. We lit the space and let @sophiaemendes6 and @dancermenz guide the session! Instantly, I was moved to make a visual conversation with the dancers. To let them tell a story with poses and look. To present them as the protagonist in a sea of noisy news. 📰
